Exploring the streaming market as a public library

Description
At NBD Biblion, a leader in library services and content distribution, I led a pivotal project that explored the viability of a unique proposition: a streaming service tailored to library users. This initiative aimed to prevent the loss of their distinctive film collection by transitioning into the digital streaming space. Overseeing the project, I was responsible for staying within budget and guiding the client through each phase. I facilitated essential sessions focused on creating, capturing, and delivering value, and storytelling. As the lead developer, I built the Fake Door test in React and managed the integration of Google Analytics events, providing a foundation for our research and validation efforts.
Business and User Outcome
Our approach started with a workshop to redefine the streaming service proposition, crafting a compelling marketing narrative validated through a quantitative test with 100 respondents. The Fake Door test, a significant component of our strategy, was presented to nearly 5,000 potential users. This method not only gauged user interest but also assessed the alignment of our content—arthouse films, classic cinema, book adaptations, documentaries, and short films—with consumer preferences. The overwhelming positive response, with over 60% expressing intent to use the service, underscored the untapped potential for unique, non-mainstream content at an accessible price point for library members.
Biggest Challenge
Navigating the crowded and competitive streaming market was our foremost challenge. With heavyweights like Netflix, Disney Plus, and HBO dominating the scene, validating the library's entry into streaming was critical. The Fake Door test was instrumental in this phase, allowing us to quickly and effectively measure potential user interest and content alignment without a significant upfront investment.
What I've Learned
This project highlighted the importance of market validation and the power of offering something different from the mainstream options. It taught me the value of leading with innovation while carefully managing project parameters such as budget and stakeholder expectations. Additionally, the positive reception to our niche content offering reinforced my belief in the significance of understanding and catering to specific audience needs.
